Six materials

Density is a number, not an adjective

A roller sold as “firm” is a roller nobody can compare. Every foam product here states the density it is moulded to, every band states its resistance at a stated stretch, and every knit states the circumference it fits. That is the whole argument.

High-density EVA foam

Closed-cell EVA moulded at three densities — medium-firm at 45 kg/m³, firm at 60, extra-firm at 75. Closed-cell means it does not soak up sweat, does not hold odour, and does not compress into a flat spot the way an open-cell pool noodle does after a season.

Natural latex

Sap-tapped natural latex, layer-dipped rather than cut from sheet, so there is no edge for a tear to start from. It stretches further and snaps back harder than the synthetic alternative, and it does contain latex — stated plainly on every band page.

Cork & birch ply

Solid cork for blocks and roller sleeves, and 11-ply birch for the boards. Cork grips harder as your hands get damp, which is the opposite of what foam does, and birch ply stays flat under load where solid timber cups.

Compression knit

Circular-knitted nylon and spandex with the graduation knitted in rather than printed on. Flatlock seams, a silicone band where a sleeve has to stay put, and no neoprene anywhere — neoprene is what makes a sleeve unwearable after twenty minutes.

Reusable gel

A non-toxic glycerin gel in a puncture-resistant nylon shell, cloth-backed on the side that touches skin. It stays pliable at freezer temperature instead of setting into a brick, and it takes the microwave for the warm side of the same pack.

Glass-filled nylon & ABS

Structural plastic where a part has to take load without flexing — roller cores, massage-stick spindles, the cane. Glass-filled nylon is stiffer than plain nylon at the same wall thickness, which is why these do not creak under bodyweight.

What the densities feel like

Three foam densities and one cork. The right one is the one you will actually stay on for ten minutes — a roller too firm to tolerate is a roller in a cupboard.

45 kg/m³Medium-firm. Where to start. Standard Roller 36, Compact Roller 12.
55 kg/m³Firm and thick, for standing on rather than lying on. Balance Pad.
60 kg/m³Firm, over a rigid core, with a moulded texture. Grid Roller 13.
75 kg/m³Extra-firm, almost no give. Deep Roller 18.
CorkFirmer than any of the foams and it does not soften with use. Pro Roller 36, Cork Block Pair.

How all of this ages

EVA foamHolds its density for years indoors. UV is what turns it chalky, so keep it out of a sunny window.
LatexPerishes. Expect two to three years of regular use, and retire a band that has gone shiny, sticky or chalky.
CorkDarkens with handling and the grain varies unit to unit. That is the material, not a fault.
KnitPills lightly at friction points in the first season, then stops. Heat is what kills spandex.
GelStays pliable for years. Retire a pack the moment a seam swells or the shell splits.
Birch plyStays flat under load. Keep it off a wet floor — ply that stands in water lifts at an edge.

Two things to know before ordering

  • Natural latex is in the Latex Loop Set, the Long Band Set, the Floss Band Pair and the tube bands in the Door Anchor Set. Natural rubber is in the Mobility Mat, the Massage Ball Pair, the Peanut Ball and the dome on the Wobble Board.
